Chocolate and Nuts
March 2021
Rather than buy a chocolate bar filled with nuts limit yourself to one square of dark chocolate over 70% cocoa solids and a small handful of nuts. However do this mindfully ie. know what you are eating and how many carbs and calories this little snack contains. Never mindlessly snack, always drink a glass of water first as it may be that you are thirsty rather than hungry.
Nuts are a great source of healthy fat, protein and fibre so they make a good snack as they will fill you up. However they are high in calories so if you are trying to lose weight consume them with care. We would advise you to eat these when you can’t wait for the next meal or when nothing low-carb is at hand. We take them on board flights, to meetings that might drag on and so as not to be tempted into tucking into biscuits.
Usually the higher the percentage of cocoa solids, the less sugar it contains but do check the packets. Alternatively go for a chocolate sweetened with artificial sugar and again read the label with care. To give you an idea I have calculated the handful of nuts and chocolate using 15g walnuts and 1 square (12g) of 90% dark chocolate.
Ingredients - Serves 1
15g good quality walnuts
12g 90% dark chocolate
Snack with caution: Our nutrititonist Jenny Phillips would always say don’t snack between meals.
